En route visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (Approx. 2 ½ Hrs) Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 10965 elephants, including 4643 males and 968 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala. SIGIRIYA/KANDY Breakfast at the hotel Sigiriya – is a “World Heritage Site†and the 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky†which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the Palace on the summit of the 600-foot high rock. NUWARA ELIYA/WASKADUWA Breakfast at the hotel Transfer from Nuwara Eliya to Waskaduwa (06 hrs) Turtle Hatchery Visit to the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda. Five of the worlds 8 species of turtles nest in Sri Lankan beaches. All 5 species are listed as endangered. The Turtle Hatchery at Kosgoda is a conservation project that is helping to sustain and enhance the stability of sea turtles.You can visit the Hatchery, observe its activities and learn about these fascinating creatures If you swing by during the day you will get to see all the adorable little hatchlings or the older and wiser turtles doing their thing in the tanks. But the real fun is being part of the release! It goes down almost everyday around sunset. The staff will pick out the ones fit for release, put them in little buckets and hand them to you. Where you can see five species of turtles-Green Turtles (Cheloniamydas), Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelysimbricata), Loggerhead Turtle (Carettacaretta), Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelyscoriacea) and Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelysolivacea). WASKADUWA/COLOMBO/AIRPORT Breakfast at the hotel Transfer from Waskaduwa to Colombo (01Hr) Commence city tour of *Colombo – a drive through the city taking you to the busy commercial areas as well as the tree-lined residential, Cinnamon Gardens. Visit Fort, the former British administrative center and military garrison, Sea Street – the Goldsmiths quarters in the heart of Pettah, the Bazaar area, where is also a Hindu Temple with elaborate stone carvings and the Dutch Church of Wolfendhal dating back to 1749. Also visit the BMICH, see the replica of Avukana Buddha and Independence Square. Shopping in Colombo – visit Mlesna exquisite tea boutique, cashew nut shop, ready made garments and all sorts at Majestic City.
