GOBUSTAN & ATESHGAH TOUR After Breakfast, Visit to Ateshgah Temple is one of the places that come in the first page of not only Azerbaijan history, but also world history. Its located 30 km from the center of Baku in the suburb of Surakhany. This territory is such unique natural phenomenon as burning natural gas outlets (underground gas coming onto surface contacts oxygen and lights up). The name Ateshgah comes from Persian language and means home of fire. Based on Persian and Indian inscriptions the temple was used as a Hindu, Sikh and Zoroastrian place of worship. The temple in its present state was constructed in the 17th-18th centuries. It was built by the Baku-based Hindu community related to Sikhs. However, the history of the Temple is even longer. From times immemorial this was the holy place of Zoroastrians- fire worshippers. After the introduction of Islam Zoroastrian temple was destroyed. Many Zoroastrians left to India and there continued their worship. But in the 15th -17th centuries the Hindus-fire worshippers who came to Absheron with trading caravans began to make pilgrimages to Surakhany. The Indian merchants started erection of the temple. The earliest temple part is dated 1713. The latest – the central temple-altar was built with the support of merchant Kanchangar in 1810. During the 18th century chapels, cells, a caravanserai were added to the central part of the temple. The complex was turned into a museum in 1975 Visit to Museum of Petroglyphsis (outdoor museum) – Gobustan or as its called Outdoor Museum of Petroglyphsis is located approximately 65 km from Baku. Prehistoric rock drawings – petroglyphs – are an art archive of the human evolution on Earth. The articles of such archives are the first transmissions from the human to the outer world. Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape covers three areas of a plateau of rocky boulders rising out of the semi-desert of central Azerbaijan, with an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings bearing testimony to 40,000 years of rock art. The site also features the remains of inhabited caves, settlements and burials, all reflecting an intensive human use by the inhabitants of the area during the wet period that followed the last Ice Age, from the Upper Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. The site, which covers an area of 537 ha, is part of the larger protected Gobustan Reservation Overnight stay at hotel

Day 3

Shamakhi Deri Baba, Gabala Vinery Shamakhi Eleven major earthquakes have rocked Shamakhi, but through multiple reconstructions it maintained its role as the economic and administrative capital of Shirvan and one of the key towns on the Silk Road. The only building to have survived eight of the eleven earthquakes is the landmark Juma Mosque of Shamakhi, built in the 10th century. Gabala is the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. Archeological evidence indicates that the city functioned as the capital of Caucasian Albania as early as the 4th century BC.[4] Up to the present time there are the ruins of the ancient city and the main gate of Caucasian Albania. Ongoing excavations near the village Chukhur show that Gabala from 4th – 3rd centuries BC and up to the 18th century was one of the main cities with developed trade and crafts. The ruins of the ancient town are situated 15 km from the regional center, allocated on the territory between Garachay and Jourluchay rivers.[5][6] Gabala was located in the middle of the 2,500-year-old Silk Road, and was mentioned by Pliny the Younger as “Kabalaka”, Greek geographer Ptolemy as “Khabala”, Arabic historian Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Baladhuri as “Khazar”. In the 19th century, the Azerbaijani historian Abbasgulu Bakikhanov mentioned in his book Gulistani Irem that Kbala or Khabala were in fact Gabala. Overnight stay at the Hotel

Day 4

OLD CITY EXCURSION (WALKING TOUR) AND DEPARTURE Breakfast at the hotel. Then proceed to Old City or as it’s called locally Icherisheher is a one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and unique historical part of Azerbaijan which is located in the Centre of Baku. The excursion will let you dive into the spirit of the Islamic civilization and you’ll be amazed of how the Old City combines the ancient and modern buildings. You will see the old mosques and caravansaries, old trading squares and baths houses, hear the history and legends of the Maiden Tower, enter to Shirvanshah’s Palace – the biggest monument of the Shirvan-Absheron branch of the Azerbaijan architecture. Shirvanhahs Palace is an important piece of Azerbaijani history. It was built in 15th century by Shirvanshah kingdom who ruled mostly in the current territory of Azerbaijan in 861 — 1538. The Palace is the biggest monument of the Shirvan-Absheron branch of the Azerbaijan architecture, situated in the Inner City of Baku. The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the shah’s mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi’s mausoleum, a portal in the east – Murad’s gate, a reservoir and the remnants of the bath-house. Probably if you surfed the internet beforehand to get to know more about Baku, you should already have heard about the Maiden Tower (Gyz Galasy) which is situated in the Old Town facing City Boulevard and the Caspian Sea. In spite of the inscription on its wall, stating its building time to 12th century and authorship to Masud ibn Davud, there are many doubts about it, as the design of the tower and used stone completely differs from the other buildings that were built around it. Many scientists have different arguments on its building time. It has completely mysterious look, which makes it outstanding among any other buildings of Baku.
